Ouida Newton, a math teacher at Poyen High School, was named the 2015 Arkansas Teacher of the Year today at a surprise notification event in Poyen.

Becoming an Arkansas Teacher Event Set for Nov. 22

Support National Parental Involvement Day Nov. 20


The Arkansas Department of Education encourages parents, teachers, administrators and businesses to support National Parental Involvement Day Nov. 20. Research shows that a child’s academic progress greatly improves when parents or guardians are involved in their child’s education.

215 Public Schools Qualify for Reward Funds


Based on results from the 2014 school year, as authorized through the Arkansas School Recognition and Reward Program, 215 public schools are recognized as high performing schools.

67 Schools Improve, Receiving Achieving Status


A total of 67 public schools showed sufficient improvement on test scores to meet annual targets that were approved by the U.S. Department of Education and are designated as Achieving schools.

Ebola Guidance for Arkansas Schools


The World Health Organization declared an international emergency related to the Ebola Virus Disease outbreak in West Africa in September. Responses to this outbreak include: 1) neutralizing the outbreak within the countries of origin, 2) preventing transmission outside the country by screening travelers at departure from West Africa and re-entry to their home country, and 3) alerting health providers and others to increase their surveillance of those at risk. The Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) is committed to supporting objective three by educating travelers and those institutions such as schools that host travelers as well as providers about managing those at risk.

Arkansas' Advanced Placement Scores Increase in 2014


Arkansas students' overall Advanced Placement scores increased in 2014.

Four Arkansas Schools Recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools


The U.S. Department of Education named four Arkansas schools as 2014 National Blue Ribbon Schools. The four public schools were Centerpoint Primary School in the Centerpoint School District, Eastside Elementary School in the Rogers School District, M.A. Hardin Elementary School in the White Hall School District and Norfork Elementary School in the Norfork School District. St. Joseph Catholic School in Fayetteville was also named a National Blue Ribbon School. St. Joseph is a private school.

Four Named Arkansas Teacher of the Year State Finalists


Four exemplary teachers were named 2015 Arkansas Teacher of the Year State Finalists at a ceremony with Gov. Mike Beebe today at the Capitol.
