Commissioner Kimbrell Issues Statement on Connecticut School Shooting

“Today is a day of sadness and grief for everyone who cares for children. It is hard to imagine a tragedy such as that experienced in Newtown, Connecticut.

Our hearts and prayers are with the parents, children, teachers, administrators and other staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary and the surrounding community.

Please spend some time discussing this incident with your children. Senseless tragedies like this are not always preventable, but we do all we can to make our children safe. Talking about these events at home will help shore up the feeling of security we want our children to have in our schools. At the same time, these talks will also reinforce the importance of our children remembering and following emergency protocols at school.

School counselors will be available Monday for children who are in distress. Please let your child's principal or teacher know if your child needs assistance.

As in any frightening situation, young children should not be exposed to the extensive media coverage of the event. We strongly recommend schools and parents avail themselves of resources to help them talk with children about this disaster.”
