Standards do not tell teachers how to teach; they help teachers understand the knowledge and skills that students need. Local teachers and administrators make decisions about daily classroom instruction and how the standards are to be met. The “common” in Common Core State Standards does not mean that students in the same grade across the state or even across a district must receive identical instruction on the same topics at the same time; the “common” does mean that by the end of a school year all students in the same grade will have received instruction based on the same set of standards.
