Accreditation Process

The initial accreditation report for school year will be based on data submitted by the district as part of the Cycle 2 reporting and will include current information in the Arkansas Educator Licensure System (AELS). Each superintendent receives an electronic initial report that includes a list of violations/citations for the school year.

Districts should review all information for accuracy (LEA number(s), school name, total number of schools, etc.), as well as review initial violations listed for the year, and confirm that all citations are correct, by submitting supporting documents to the assigned Standards for Accreditation Specialist by April 15 of the current school year. The assigned Standards for Accreditation specialist will enter acceptable changes requested in writing by the district. The final accreditation status for each school will be based on remaining violations/citations; refer to ADE Rules Governing Standards for Accreditation of Arkansas Public Schools and School Districts (August 2015). As mandated by the Omnibus Quality Education Act (Act 1467 of 2003/ A.C.A. §6-15-203), final accreditation status will be determined by May 15 of the current school year.

Right of Appeal (after May 15)

In the event that a school district believes the ADE has improperly determined that a school or school district has failed to meet Standards for Accreditation, the school district shall have a right to file its written appeal with:

Any such appeal shall be held in an open hearing and the decision of the State Board of Education shall be in open session.  The appeal must be filed not later than May 15 following the May 1 written notification; the Board hearing must be held prior to June 15.

The Board may confirm the accreditation status of a school or school district recommended by the ADE or it may sustain the appeal of the district.

Pursuant to the Ark. Code Ann. § 6-15-203, an appeal from the ruling of the Board may be made by a school district to the Pulaski County Circuit Court provided such appeal is made pursuant to the Arkansas Administrative Procedures Act, Ark. Code Ann. § 25-15-201 et seq.

Appeals Process and State Board of Education Confirmation of Accreditation Status – May through June 15

  • Each school district, charter, and special population has the Right of Appeal in the event they believe the ADE has improperly determined that a school or school district has failed to meet Standards for Accreditation.
  • Technical support on the appeals process is provided to districts as needed
  • Review appeals of recommended accreditation status to prepare report and responses for potential appeals for State Board of Education June agenda.
  • The Standards for Accreditation Unit recommends to the State Board of Education in the June State Board of Education meeting a final annual accreditation status for each school in the state.
  • State Board of Education has the choice to confirm the recommended status or grant the appeal
  • Standards for Accreditation Unit specialists must reprocess the final accreditation report in Standards Annual Accreditation System (SAAS) if an appeal has been granted
  • Follow record retention processes to maintain reports
