The first step to designing a quality digital learning environment is to embrace an instructional shift from a one-size fits all model towards a personalized model for each student. This shift includes an online component that provides real-time data measuring student progress that serves as a roadmap for the instructor. The resources on this page are designed to assist you in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of a quality digital learning environment for your students. We encourage you to choose student-centered scenarios that meet Act 1280 requirements but to also look beyond the requirement and offer students an array of options that are available.
The transformation occurs when a school moves to an instructional design that is student-centered, giving the student some element of control over time, place, path, and/or pace of their learning using digital content. One-to-one hardware programs for students, software, or digital content alone does not provide a blended learning classroom. We have seen increased learner engagement using these technology integration tools, but the definition of blended learning is more focused on a transformation of instructional models toward student-centered learning. When a student is provided some element of control over their own learning, a school is taking steps toward a transformation.
There is a broad spectrum of understanding when it comes to the term “digital learning.” Arkansas has primarily focused on placing media-rich digital resources in the hands of educators, training educators to incorporate them into the classroom, and providing compressed interactive video and online courses to schools. These two services land at the lowest end AND the highest end of the digital learning spectrum.
We are entering an age where a school’s focus may be on the “middle” of the spectrum in the blended learning realm. Please print a copy of the Digital Learning Spectrum and study it as you plan your digital learning environment.
