Transitional Mathematics Courses

 A.C.A. § 6-15-2012(b) states, “(b) a high school shall provide for each student who does not meet the college and career readiness standards under the assessment: (1) one or more transitional courses designed to help the student reach college and career readiness standards; and (2) related strategies to allow for accelerated skill and knowledge development consistent with the college and career readiness standards.” Arkansas schools may fulfill these requirements by offering ADE approved Transitional courses: one each for Math and Literacy.  Academic advisors should work with students and parents to determine if the transitional course being offered is appropriate. Prior academic classes, post-secondary intentions, scores, and other appropriate information, whether qualitative or quantitative, should be considered when determining appropriateness of a transitional course. Transitional courses are rigorous and are not to be confused with remediation.

Transitional Math Options

Option 1: Transitional Math Ready (439110) - Fourth Math Credit

Transitional Math Ready addresses some of the essential college- and career-readiness standards from Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II. Schools offering Transitional Math Ready must fully instruct students in the following Southern Regional Educational Board (SREB) Math Ready Modules using the SREB curriculum:
• Unit 1: Algebraic Expressions
• Unit 2: Equations
• Unit 3: Measurement and Proportional Reasoning
• Unit 4: Linear Functions
• Unit 5: Linear Systems of Equations
• Unit 6: Quadratic Functions
• Unit 7: Exponential Functions
Students who enroll in this course must be in the 11th or 12th grade and have successfully completed Algebra II or be currently enrolled in Algebra II. Students successfully completing Transitional Math Ready shall receive a fourth mathematics credit that meets the Smart Core requirement of a math beyond Algebra II.

Transitional Math Ready teachers must attend three (3) days of professional development and any required follow-up training for schools to offer this course. 
Teachers with the following licensure codes may teach Transitional Math Ready: 110, 200, 4650, or 251.

Option 2: Algebra III (439070) - Fourth Math Credit

Algebra III will enhance the higher-level thinking skills developed in Algebra II through a more in-depth study of those concepts and exploration of some pre-calculus concepts to prepare students for transition to College Algebra. Students in Algebra III will be challenged to increase understanding of algebraic, graphical, and numerical methods to analyze, translate, and solve polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions. Modeling real-world situations is an important part of this course. Sequences and series will be used to represent and analyze real-world problems and mathematical situations. Algebra III will also include a study of matrices and conics.
Teachers with the following licensure codes may teach Algebra III: 110, 200, 4650, or 251.
