Thank you for your interest in the APPEL Program.  Applications have closed for 2017-2018. The program will begin taking applications again in mid-February 2018.  Website updates are coming in late November or early December 2017 with new FAQs and information regarding application for the 2018-2019 year. Please refer to APPEL FAQ for the most current information regarding next year’s program.

The Arkansas Professional Pathway to Educator Licensure (APPEL), a nontraditional licensure program, is an alternate route to teacher licensure administered by the Arkansas Department of Education. Enrollment in this program allows a candidate with a bachelor’s degree or higher to be employed as a classroom teacher while completing the necessary requirements for a Standard Arkansas Teaching License.

The program is a two-year preparation track that includes:

  • Appropriate employment as a classroom teacher
  • Assessments
  • Evaluation and feedback via the state’s teacher evaluation model
  • Face to face and online Instructional Modules
  • Mentoring for the duration of time in the program
  • On-the-job professional learning

Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, and must have passed the state mandated assessments prior to making application to the program. APPEL participants are mentored for the duration of their time in the program.

Participants work, as teacher of record, under a Provisional Arkansas teaching license for two years. Upon successful completion of the program, participants receive a Standard Arkansas teaching license.
